Frequently Asked Questions About Wooden Baby Spoons (FAQs)
Are Wooden Baby Spoons Sanitary?
Yes, it’s perfectly safe to eat with wooden spoons, and they even have natural antimicrobial properties. Of course, proper care is important, and you should always wash your spoon with hot water and soap after every use.
How to Care for a Wooden Spoon
Natural wood dries out over time and needs a conditioning agent to keep it soft. Most brands use mineral oils, but we prefer a blend of fractionated coconut oil and beeswax to add moisture back into the wood grain. You’ll want to condition your wood products about every two weeks, or anytime they look dry.
Can Wooden Spoons Go in the Dishwasher?
Wooden spoons ask for a little more intentional care than plastic dishes, so they shouldn’t be put in the dishwasher. But they’re easy to handwash in soapy water (something your children can help with!).
Are Wooden Spoons Better Than Plastic?
Wooden spoons are much more durable than plastic, and they don’t release microplastics and hormone disruptors into our food. They are generally considered much better options than plastic and are better for the earth and our communities. Wood is heat-resistant, has natural antibacterial properties, and adds beauty to your space.
I ordered one of these for our soon-to-be eating-table-food baby, as one of our many steps to get away from plastic/silicon in our kitchen. I ALSO ordered a spoon (and a spreading knife!) as a gift for my mom who does charcuterie spreads, to add to her serving displays!
We ordered two for our little guy starting solids and are so happy with the quality! Very smooth, so no rough spots or splinter for little mouths. Great size and easy to clean, especially when we use the wood balm to keep them in really good shape.
