General

How Do You Source Your Ingredients?

Ingredient quality is one of our top priorities! In a world that values cheap and fast, we're committed to sourcing the best oils, herbs, beeswax, tallow, and more.

We use suppliers that are transparent, providing extensive documentation on their ingredient quality and testing. This is especially important for oils and essential oils, which are notorious for containing cheaper "filler" oils.

We also prioritize the most local options possible, supporting small farmers and growers that share our values.

Are Your Products Safe for Pregnant / Breastfeeding Mamas?

We have four young children ourselves, so we are right in the thick of pregnancy and nursing! Since our goods originate with our own desire for the safest products for our family, we constantly use them all ourselves.

Ingredient-Specific Notes:

Bakuchiol (in our Rejuvenate Facial Tallow) lacks extensive pregnancy-specific clinical safety studies, but it is generally considered to be a safe, effective alternative to retinol for pregnant women.

In our products that contain essential oils, we use very low concentrations, well below the manufacturer's recommended usage rates. However, essential oils can be controversial since they lack research studies and definitive safety data for pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you prefer to be extra cautious (especially during first trimester), choose one of our infused products that does not contain essential oils (Vanilla Bean, Coffee, Calendula, or Unscented). Our Vitamin C Serum is also a great option.

All that being said, please consult your healthcare provider with any skincare product concerns!

TALLOW

Where Do You Source Your Tallow?

Our suet comes from local farms practicing regenerative agriculture. The cattle are 100% pasture-raised (grass-fed and finished), with no antibiotics or hormones given. We render this suet into tallow using a dry-rendering method and careful filtering. The available data shows that this traditional rendering method best preserves the fatty acid profile of the tallow.

We don’t “purify”/”refine” our tallow with water, salt, and/or baking soda. This newer method (wet rendering) creates more opportunities for bacterial growth, alters the fatty acids, and can potentially leave salt behind. It’s also not necessary, especially with the high-quality, clean suet we start with.

Does Tallow Smell Like Beef?

We've fine-tuned our rendering method to avoid any smell. Most people say that they don't smell anything when they try our Unscented Tallow Butter, or if they do, a hint of buttery pastry.

What Can I Use Tallow For?

Any dry skin! Try it on your face, lips, legs, hands, feet, pregnant belly, or children's dry skin patches.

Will Tallow Clog My Pores?

This one is complicated! The comedogenic scale is the typical resource for determining if a particular oil is more/less likely to clog pores, with scores ranging from 0 (least likely) - 5 (most likely). Generally, tallow is considered to be a 2. However, the comedogenic scale is based on tests of mice ears, and is not considered to be precise or a one-size-fits-all indicator.

Since tallow functions as an occlusive, it creates a barrier on your skin to seal in moisture and protect against transepidermal water loss. This also means it can seal bacteria into your skin, so we highly recommend cleansing your face before applying tallow!

The quality of the tallow and the other oils in the formulation can also affect how your skin responds. We're committed to sourcing the best oils, herbs, beeswax, tallow, and more.

The best way to find out how your skin will respond is to try it for yourself!

My Skin Feels Greasy After Applying Tallow. Is This Normal?

While tallow will take a minute or two to soak into your skin, if it still feels greasy after that, try using less. You might be surprised how much less you need to use compared to a conventional lotion.

What Is The Shelf Life of Tallow?

Tallow shouldn't go moldy (unless water is introduced), but like any oil, it will eventually oxidize. You can tell that tallow is becoming rancid if it starts to smell like crayons, walnuts, or just different than its original scent. The samples we've tested have lasted well beyond a year, but we recommend using within six months of opening to be safe.

Your tallow is best stored in a cool, dry place. If stored in the refrigerator, it will last even longer.

To help extend the shelf life, we do our best to ship all of our products within a few weeks of being made. We also add Vitamin E, an antioxidant, and we use amber jars that reduces light exposure.

My Tallow Melted In Shipping! What Should I Do?

During the summer, we do our best to package tallow to avoid melting. If it does, put it in the refrigerator right away until it's solid again. It's still perfectly safe to use, the texture will just be a little different.

Your tallow should not be grainy! If it is, it probably melted and then hardened again at room temperature. Please reach out to us for help.
