The Ingredient Glossary

100% Grass-Fed Tallow

100% Grass-Fed Tallow

Our cows are regeneratively raised, grass-fed, and grass-finished to encourage high fatty acid content before harvest. We use only suet fat and carefully dry render it at low temperatures to preserve the nutrient profile. Used in skincare for generations, tallow is a prized primal resource because it’s highly compatible with our skin.
Castor Oil

Castor Oil

Native to the Mediterranean, castor oil is great for naturally glowing and resilient skin. Our oil is hexane-free and cold-pressed for higher levels of minerals and fatty acids (particularly, ricinoleic acid, a unique antioxidant that makes up 90% of castor oil). Since the oil is thick, we prefer mixing it with other skincare ingredients to tone down the sticky feel.
Polyglyceryl-4 Oleate

Polyglyceryl-4 Oleate

In human terms, this is a natural vegetable glycerine that’s used to mix water and oil. We use it as a natural alternative to polysorbate, stearate, and other chemical emulsifiers.
Jojoba Oil

Jojoba Oil

This plant-based oil closely mimics human sebum. Jojoba (pronounced huh-ho-bah) is lightweight, nutrient-dense, and highly absorbent. It helps balance the skin barrier and soothe disruption without feeling sticky. Ours is sourced from the Arizona desert.
Jojoba Beads

Jojoba Beads

Formed from a plant-based oil that melts beautifully into the skin, jojoba beads create a gentle exfoliation without microtears. This makes them effective for removing dead skin, but still safe for sensitive skin and gentle on the face.
Elderberry

Elderberry

Since elderberries grow in forest areas, it’s easy to mistake them for shrubs or weeds. These superfruit berries are local to the United States, and they’re full of nutrients that fight free radicals, calm inflammation, and tighten the skin.
Seabuckthorn

Seabuckthorn

Extracted from bright orange berries, you can see the carotenoids in seabuckthorn oil when you pour it into your hand. We use seabuckthorn oil for skin regeneration for people who want to soothe skin disruptions and fine lines.
Rosemary

Rosemary

Reach for this gentle garden herb anytime you need extra coziness and comfort. On the skin, it’s used for its natural antioxidant properties.
Orange Peel

Orange Peel

We use it for its naturally bright scent, but it comes with added antioxidants, which can even the skin tone.
Bergamot Peel

Bergamot Peel

Famously found along the coast of Italy, bergamot is a cross between a lemon and a bitter orange. The peel is yellow, but the flavor profile is bold and sweet, similar to oranges. We mainly use bergamot peel to naturally scent products and add an extra sprinkle of antioxidants.
Lemon

Lemon

The peel is the most nutrient-dense part of the lemon, but it often goes to waste. An easy way to use those nutrients is with lemon peel extracts that scent our skincare products. Lemon peel is rich in bioactive compounds like flavonoids and limonene, which give us the tangy citrus scent.
Vitamin E Oil (Mixed Tocopherols)

Vitamin E Oil (Mixed Tocopherols)

A tried-and-true heritage skincare remedy, vitamin E is used to moisturize the skin, protect against sun damage, and soften scars and fine lines. Ours is derived from 100% non-GMO sunflower seeds, and we use it for the potent antioxidants, which also help extend the shelf life of the other oils.

Your Use and Care Guide

Start with a clean face and scoop out a pea-sized amount of tallow face scrub. Gently apply to your face in a circular motion for a few minutes, until your skin feels fresh. Rinse thoroughly.

Since tallow scrub is an exfoliant, it should only be used a few times per week. Make sure you dip into the jar with dry fingers (you don’t want to add water to the formula). For best results, store in a cool, dry place and use within 6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tallow Scrub

Polish | Tallow Scrub

How to Exfoliate Your Face

Start with a pea-sized amount of our natural exfoliating scrub. Gently apply it to your face and exfoliate in a circular motion. Don’t press into the skin or create pressure; just let the jojoba beads do the job for you. Exfoliate for 1–2 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Then apply a serum and moisturizer to seal in nutrients. You can exfoliate any time of day, but the skin tends to repair best at night.

How Often Can You Exfoliate Your Face?

If you’re new to face exfoliation, it’s best to start slow. Once a week is perfectly fine, and you may eventually work up to 2–3 weekly sessions if your skin is particularly oily or uneven.

Should You Moisturize After Exfoliating Your Face?

You should always moisturize after exfoliating your face. Even gentle exfoliants are a bit disruptive, and your skin needs immediate nutrients and moisture to rebuild. With fresh skin that’s clear of gunk, like oil buildup and dead skin cells, you’re likely to absorb the moisturizer and skincare better, too.

Is It Safe to Exfoliate Your Face?

Generally, yes. Cell turnover happens on your face just like everywhere else on the body, and exfoliating provides a deeper clean and fresh feel, especially for people with oily skin. There are many ways to exfoliate your face, ranging from our gentle Tallow Scrub to chemical and laser exfoliants.

If you’re exfoliating at home, use natural ingredients like jojoba beads, sugar, or a lymphatic brush. Lasers and chemical exfoliants should be done by a professional. For home care, just be mindful of how often you exfoliate your face, since over-exfoliation can impact your skin barrier. We recommend 2–3 sessions per week.
