The Same Restorative Results You Expect from Retinol

Traditional vitamin A is considered the holy grail of anti-aging skincare, but it has downsides. Photosensitivity, skin barrier disruption, and “retinol burn” are all considered normal side-effects. But there’s a natural plant-based ingredient that’s just as effective and much more gentle.

Bakuchiol comes from the edible seeds of the Babchi plant. It’s not in the retinol family, but its nutrient profile stimulates collagen and cell repair for a tight and balanced complexion. Blended with tallow, it’s hydrating, highly absorbent, and your go-to for wrinkles, fine lines, dark spots, and skin elasticity.

Benefits of Your Bakuchiol Skincare:

  • Target fine lines and dark spots
  • Balance skin during hormone shifts
  • Improve elasticity and cell turnover
  • No “retinol burn” or photosensitivity
  • Just as effective as retinol
  • Gentle on sensitive skin

The Ingredient Glossary

100% Grass-Fed Tallow

100% Grass-Fed Tallow

Our cows are regeneratively raised, grass-fed, and grass-finished to encourage high fatty acid content before harvest. We use only suet fat and carefully dry render it at low temperatures to preserve the nutrient profile. Used in skincare for generations, tallow is a prized primal resource because it’s highly compatible with our skin.
Jojoba Oil

Jojoba Oil

This plant-based oil closely mimics human sebum. Jojoba (pronounced huh-ho-bah) is lightweight, nutrient-dense, and highly absorbent. It helps balance the skin barrier and soothe disruption without feeling sticky. Ours is sourced from the Arizona desert.
Castor Oil

Castor Oil

Native to the Mediterranean, castor oil is great for naturally glowing and resilient skin. Our oil is hexane-free and cold-pressed for higher levels of minerals and fatty acids (particularly, ricinoleic acid, a unique antioxidant that makes up 90% of castor oil). Since the oil is thick, we prefer mixing it with other skincare ingredients to tone down the sticky feel.
Pomegranate Seed Oil

Pomegranate Seed Oil

The pomegranate is an ancient symbol of beauty and royalty, so it makes sense that using it in skincare is a time-tested tradition. Pomegranate seed is rich in conjugated alpha-linolenic acid (also found in tallow) and punicic acid, which support healthy blood flow.
Rosehip Seed Oil

Rosehip Seed Oil

Rosehip seeds help improve skin texture and elasticity while reducing the appearance of scars and fine lines. Since cold-pressed rosehips tend to go rancid quickly, we use an oil that’s extracted at low temperatures.
Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol

In the skincare world, bakuchiol is most commonly known as a “retinol alternative.” It’s sourced from the seeds of the babchi plant and used in traditional Chinese medicine. Our bakuchiol comes from the only source that’s been clinically proven to have retinol-like results (like skin tightening and smoother fine lines and wrinkles).
Vanilla Beans

Vanilla Beans

Our vanilla bean is grade A and sourced from Madagascar. It’s mostly used to infuse a natural cupcake scent into skincare products, but it contains some antioxidants and B vitamins, too. We use the actual vanilla bean, so people who are sensitive to essential oils can still use the products.
Lavender

Lavender

A calming herb, dried lavender can be placed under your pillow for better sleep. Use it to reset your nervous system, enhance collagen production in the skin, or to keep your babies calmly tucked in for the night.
Rosemary

Rosemary

Reach for this gentle garden herb anytime you need extra coziness and comfort. On the skin, it’s used for its natural antioxidant properties.
Vitamin E Oil (Mixed Tocopherols)

Vitamin E Oil (Mixed Tocopherols)

A tried-and-true heritage skincare remedy, vitamin E is used to moisturize the skin, protect against sun damage, and soften scars and fine lines. Ours is derived from 100% non-GMO sunflower seeds, and we use it for the potent antioxidants, which also help extend the shelf life of the other oils.

Your Use and Care Guide

With clean hands and a clean face, scoop out a pea-sized amount of tallow balm. Apply to your face as the last step in your skincare routine. Bakuchiol is safe to use twice a day, and won’t cause photosensitivity or retinol burn. Since tallow is such a rich ingredient, it’s easy to use too much. If your skin feels greasy after application, use less product next time.

Can Bakuchiol Be Used in the Morning?

Bakuchiol doesn’t come with the same photosensitivity as retinol, so it’s perfectly safe to use in the morning. While it’s considered a retinol alternative, bakuchiol doesn’t have vitamin A content. It promotes anti-aging results with plant-based materials and antioxidants.

Does Bakuchiol Work?

In studies, bakuchiol has shown similar anti-aging results to retinols. Since it promotes firm, smooth, and wrinkle-free complexions, there are virtually no downsides to using bakuchiol instead of retinol. The only real difference is that bakuchiol isn’t a vitamin A product, and it’s much safer for sensitive skin.

What Does Bakuchiol Do for Skin?

Bakuchiol is a natural anti-aging ingredient that focuses on skin plumping, smoothing, and wrinkle prevention. When you add it to your skincare routine, you might notice a more balanced complexion that’s naturally resilient to aging. Since it’s a gentle plant-based ingredient, you won’t have to worry about photosensitivity or retinol burn.

What’s a Good Retinol Alternative for Pregnancy?

Although Bakuchiol lacks pregnancy-specific clinical studies, it’s generally considered to be safe and effective for pregnant women. It doesn’t come with the same limitations and warnings you’ll see on a retinol bottle.
