The Ingredient Glossary

100% Grass-Fed Tallow

100% Grass-Fed Tallow

Our cows are regeneratively raised, grass-fed, and grass-finished to encourage high fatty acid content before harvest. We use only suet fat and carefully dry render it at low temperatures to preserve the nutrient profile. Used in skincare for generations, tallow is a prized primal resource because it’s highly compatible with our skin.
Jojoba Oil

Jojoba Oil

This plant-based oil closely mimics human sebum. Jojoba (pronounced huh-ho-bah) is lightweight, nutrient-dense, and highly absorbent. It helps balance the skin barrier and soothe disruption without feeling sticky. Ours is sourced from the Arizona desert.
Vitamin E Oil (Mixed Tocopherols)

Vitamin E Oil (Mixed Tocopherols)

A tried-and-true heritage skincare remedy, vitamin E is used to moisturize the skin, protect against sun damage, and soften scars and fine lines. Ours is derived from 100% non-GMO sunflower seeds, and we use it for the potent antioxidants, which also help extend the shelf life of the other oils.
Calendula

Calendula

Pronounced "ca-LEND-u-la", this garden herb has a gentle and historic presence. It’s known for potent anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and antibacterial properties, and our ancestors kept it on hand for liver support and wound care.

Your Use and Care Guide

Always apply whipped tallow balm to damp skin for best results. Use dry fingers when reaching into the jar. Start with a pea-sized amount and apply it to the face, elbows, knees, diaper rash areas, cradle cap, or anywhere that needs extra love. Since tallow is nutrient-dense and not watered down, a little goes a long way. If it feels greasy on your skin, try using less next time.

Store in a cool place and use within 6 months for best results. If the tallow balm melts, place it in the refrigerator until firm again. Although calendula is often recommended for wound care, you shouldn’t use it on open wounds without consulting your health care provider. If you are allergic to plants in the daisy or aster family (ragweed or chrysanthemums, for example), you may also react to calendula.

Frequently Asked Questions About Calendula Tallow Balm

Jar of Schneider Goods Co Calendula Tallow Face & Body Butter on a wooden surface with dried herbs.

What Does Calendula Do for Skin?

Calendula is a flower that’s known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It’s a traditional medicine cabinet herb commonly used for wounds, dry skin, stretch marks, and premature aging. Using calendula regularly can balance the skin barrier and reduce irritation, redness, and skin disruptions. We keep it on hand for kids’ bumps and bruises, diaper rashes, and cradle cap.

Can I Put Calendula on My Face?

Yes, it’s generally safe for all skin types to use calendula on the face. That said, if you have allergies to plants in the daisy or aster family, you may want to patch test calendula tallow balm before using it on your face.

How to Use Calendula for Skin

Calendula is common in salves, balms, creams, and lotions. While it’s easier to formulate with essential oils, we prefer whole herbs because they tend to work better for highly sensitive skin.

What Are the Benefits of Tallow Balm?

Tallow balm delivers a vast nutrient profile that other skincare products need a lab to reproduce. Lipids, fatty acids, and fat-soluble vitamins are all naturally present in tallow, and since they’re not artificially made, they’re more compatible with human sebum.
