How to Care for Wooden Cutting Boards, Utensils, & More

Extend the life of the wood in your home with these simple tips!

1. When dirty, clean them throughly with hot, soapy water.

2. Let them dry completely! It’s really important to allow air flow on both sides of the board, so make sure they are propped up (not lying on a surface).

3. When they start to look dry, oil them with our Wood Restore conditioning wax or fractionated coconut oil. Mineral oil is the most common choice, but since it’s made from petroleum, we prefer this alternative!

HOW TO CONDITION: Make sure the wood is completely dry. Rub on a generous amount of wood conditioner, then let it sit for several hours. Wipe off any extra.

Do NOT:

  • Put wood in the dishwasher
  • Let it soak in water
  • Soak it in boiling water to “sanitize” it. This will only wreck your wood, and actually works against the natural antimicrobial properties of wood, which require a dry environment.
  • Use regular coconut oil, olive oil, or another food oil to condition your boards (these will go rancid inside the wood).
